I get all this and totally understand Ohtani is a great player and will go down as one of all time greats. As others mentioned dodgers were talented team even if you take him out they would most likely get into playoffs. Who knows his boost in offense was aided by resting and not playing field which you can’t possibly know how much factor that was and quantify.
Lindor was our leader played the one of mosf demanding positions in baseball without him Mets are the Marlins or Nats. Remember 1988 MVP strawberry has the stats obviously not Ohtani level but Gibson won MVP for his leadership he provided dodgers. I think Lindor should be mvp for all those reasons. Just my ou
I really took my time to read & understand the stats - (WAR & wBOR). There apears to be a lot of dislike for Othhani. Most of it because he was a DH and may win the MVP over our hero Lindor. They havent given out the award yet so we may all be surpised. It doesnt matter that Ohtani was a DH - the guy is a tremendous talent and put up the numbers that JB elaborated on. IMO he is well deserving of the MVP. Due to the fact that leadership - turning arround a sinking ship, and carrying his team to the playoffs that every other Met player looked up to - Lindor would be the choice. Without Ohtani and all the injuries the Dodgers had they dont get to the playoffs. I'm old enough to remember with Keith was a "co-mvp" with Stargel - that could happen to.
Good point on the co-MVP. And thanks for taking the time to read in detail. We’ve progressed from making your eyes spin with the WAR metrics lol. Hopefully this at least shows a little more detail of how it all comes together.
Actually, not to be a stat buzz killer, but I read that without Ohtani, the Dodgers would have made the playoffs in 2024. As for the Keith-Willie co-MVP, Willie was given the award the way the Oscars finally give an Oscar who has been nominated five times and never won. It was for his body of work. The "feels" as they say. Keith's "stats" were more than enough and he was robbed by having to share it.
I get it and it's obvious that Ohtani will win (unanimously) but I can't get passed the fact that while Lindor was playing Gold Glove caliber defense at SS, Ohtani was on the bench watching video, resting, or eating a sandwich.
Plus he's inviting Vientos to his home to work on defense over the winter.
I remember a game -- postseason, likely -- when the Mets turned three bang-bang double plays. Not highlight reel stuff, but extremely difficult plays where they nabbed the runner by a half-step.
Those plays won the game and Lindor was in the middle of each one.
This pretty much happened all the time.
While Ohtani did NOTHING all season long.
Lindor is my MVP.
Ohtani was the best offensive player in the NL. That's it. Once he starts pitching, he's virtually a lock at MVP moving forward. But not in 2024.
This is a factor to consider when comparing offensive stats too! If Lindor was DH he wouldn’t just have the same numbers, they’d be even better since he’s not out on field sweating and running around s
59 stolen bases! Wow! Oven mitts, bigger bases, limited throws to 1st? Maury Wills, Lou Brock and Ricky Henderson would be on 2nd with every hit or walk.
I 100% approve of Lindor's 30 bags approach. The running beats on the body and risks injury. Why the Braves let Acuna steal 60+ a year ago, thanks to that stupid bet with his brother, is beyond me. Bad knees and all.
I mean, I get that a SB specialist -- where baserunning is the key to a player's value -- should steal as often as possible. But a more valuable, more complete player? I'd tell him to save his legs because it's a long, long season.
And most of those SBs don't matter in terms of the outcome.
Totally agree with this. I predict he will never steal anywhere near this many bases again. It’s too hard on the body-not just the risk of major injury but also wear and tear. He’ll steal only when the team really needs it.
Ohtani’s season was so extreme that he’ll Win easily. But in the mid 1960’s Koufax was so extreme that he was MVP worthy many of those years. Yet some writers would not consider him for MVP because he only played one quarter of his team’s games. So how much time does Ohtani spend actually on the field in a typical game? 10-15 minutes maybe?

He essentially missed the World Series because of it.
I still think of the MVP as the player a team cannot live without and Ohtani is clearly the one player Team MLB cannot live without. #justsaying
He really benefits by hitting between Betts and Freeman.
Yes, he does. I'm with you, it's Lindor 100%. He amazed me when I'm rarely amazed anymore.
