This is my 53rd (yes thats right) opening Mets day. As a Mets fan can relish in the fact that the opening day starters were the best in MLB. Seaver, Gooden, Glavine, Santana, Martinez, Harvey, even Mr "HR" Bart Colon ! This year its Tyler Megill and all i have to say is its opening day - LETS GO METS !
Regarding the rule changes noted, still strongly dislike the runner on 2b in extra innings. A one year rule has morphed into year 3.
I get why the owners wants it. No beer sales after the 7th inning
I get why the managers wants it. Bullpen usage
I get why the media wants it. They don't want to work later than necessary
But in my humble opinion as a 60 year baseball fan, this is a gimmick.
Rarely do baseball games go past 11 or 12 innings and those that do, we remember them because they are Rare.
I get why its happening. Pitching has changed so much over the years. Not too long ago 225-250 innings for a starter was considered the norm. Today, if a pitcher gets to 180 innings, they are studs (30 starts of 6 innings).
But it is good to have Baseball back after the winter of uncertainty.
I hate the extra inning rule. But I also hate the way pitching has changed, and the blind faith in analytics metrics. Loss of forest for all the trees.
Anyone read the guest opinion piece in The NY Times yesterday. Called for a government takeover of baseball, having the National Park Service or the Library of Congress run it to preserve yet another national treasure.
“We need to stop pretending that baseball has a broad-based enthusiastic following and begin to see the game for what it is: the sports equivalent of collecting 78 r.p.m. records. Baseball is America’s game only in the sense that jazz is America’s music or that Henry James is America’s literature. It is time that we acknowledged this truth by affording baseball the same approbation we reserve for those other neglected cultural treasures”
I don't mind it, but I think the easy call was pushing it back to the 11th inning. Maybe the 12th. After that, at the start of the 13th inning, set one infielder on fire, and blindfold an outfielder.
I got them at 88 wins. Who knows. My message to Dom Smith: Look at Tylor Megill. Stay ready, stay sharp, head up: your opportunity will come. And rake.

We’ve seen over half of those together. Let’s Go Mets!
The best ones were skipping grade school and work - LETS GO METS
Guess there’s really only one thing to say... Let’s Go Mets!
Sums it up best!

A bit tongue in cheek, but made some good points.

It is the best day of the year, hands down. #LFGM
