They should give Conforto the QO. If he takes it then it's a low risk high reward proposition for the Mets; if he declines then you get a valuable draft pick. They can't risk not getting that pick if he decides to sign long term elsewhere.

I still don't understand the point of Jake coming back this season. I get it for Noah to an extent, but I see absolutely no point for Jake.

This is where I was until recently re: Conforto. I couldn't see the Mets not extending the QO and then I can't see Conforto not taking it to try to reestablish his value so he can head to free agency without the tag attached next year.

But then you have to consider how subpar his season has been, and given that he's a corner OF, what's his market? Is anyone going to give him 5 years/$100m (certainly not the 6 years/$150m he was demanding this past offseason)?

So if there's not a strong market, it's possible for the Mets to refuse the QO and then -- if Bryant or Marte or another option doesn't come together -- they can still circle back to Conforto on a manageable deal. Instead of Conforto on one year/$20m QO, maybe you get him for one year/$15m or 2 years/$30m, after giving yourself a chance to upgrade.

It'll be interesting to see how the Mets proceed, but I don't think refusing to extend the QO guarantees that he signs somewhere else.

I didn't think the 5/100 offers would be out there but those who seems to know how the markets work seem to think those numbers might still be there. I'm not convinced that he won't take it; probably 30% chance that he takes it, but even if we are able to sign him at $15m for a year, I'd prefer not risking that and guaranteeing the draft pick if we in fact lose him.

I don't think signing him for the one year prevents us from improving on one of the corner spots and I definitely think they look into that regardless of whether Conforto signs again. There's an opening in LF either way IMO.

Good thoughts, both of you. I guess today, gun to head, I make the QO and hope like hell he refuses it. Like you, the "experts" I've heard tend to think there's still a fairly robust market for MC.

These must not be easy posts to write. I agree with Harper on Conforto. Could he become a Philly and hit 40 HR next year? Yes, he could. But the Mets need to fix the Mets. All season Dom has looked like he needs a new sleep machine. Feel sorry for JD, not healthy enough to put up the season he's capable of. I think they need to Clean House and think in all of their transactions. They really need another elite starting pitcher. Keith has become Ralph Kiner, not a great announcers, but our very own treasure. The 30/30 doc was very very good to Keith, deservedly. When I read a minor league director emphasize how it's mostly about "R & D and analytics," I wonder if they are selling cough syrup or developing ballplayers.

Sorry, meant to write, "think about 2023 in all of their transactions." They have some talent who will be able to contribute at that time. Sandy absolutely must go. In 8 seasons, he's given us 6 where they Mets were a 70-win team. And the farm is terrible. It's hard to see how he's ever helped the Mets organization.
