He was worried about other players getting injured. That's why he got upset when ESPN said he was calling out the Mets for being forced to start; his point was more about making sure nobody got injured.

I think the Lowrie thing probably has some blame on both sides. He signs a 20m contract and then a couple of months later is asking to go get surgery. I can see why the Wilpons would be pissed. You wonder if he had this knee issue when he signed and kept it quiet. It seems odd they wouldn't allow him to get the surgery in the first offseason after not playing. In a way it was a blessing in the first year because you wonder if McNeil would have been buried in the depth charts and has a lot of his at bats taken away.

That’s a good point: him not playing didn’t actually seem to hurt the Mets too much on the field (ironically). It was more of a symbol of the franchise’s dysfunction.
