Would love to see then lock up el troll. Great stuff on the explanation of the numbers. I was saying to lock up Alonso after his rookie season and lot of my Mets friends said no and now they are in this predicament of now spending way more to keep him.
I think if you are going to do it, you need to go much bigger in term, in order to reap more AAV/CBT savings. He’s 22 now. Offer him 20 years at $100M, for a $5M AAV. Front load it so he gets $10M for each of the first 7 years and has an opt out, after that time so he is a free agent at 29 if he wants it, or he can be a Met for the next 13 years for $40M. If he’s half of what he thinks he’ll be, he’ll opt for free agency and the clock starts anew, but Mets will have saved a great deal by buying out his 3 years of arb and 2 years FA for just $5M AAV/CBT. If he sucks, the damage for the arb years isn’t much, and the FA years are a manageable loss given how much it’s spread out. Bobby Bonilla day, part 2.
Finding a comp is really difficult. He's so young and has so much power. McCann is probably the best comp of the group (143 OPS+ with 24 HR in his age 22 year - ended up probably being his best offensive season of his career).
I'd be very surprised if he agreed to a 68/8 deal; he has so much power, probably the most of anyone on that chart. I think he can make a reasonable argument that last year was the floor of his potential. A good defensive catcher hitting 30ish HR's a season is a pretty nice floor to work off of. I don't think it's essential that he gets signed long term since Cohen is the owner, but I still think it makes sense for the Mets to move in that direction overall.
I believe signing him to an extension right after this season starts would have the same effect on the budget moving forward. I think the deal would start w/ the 2025 season.
Great podcast Guys ! I think and $68 mil for 8 years would be great deal. Nice explaination on the math for the numbers !

So $350,000 is “a little extra”. I guess…
Glad the vets are razzing Jett Williams - it means he belongs.
Who is Shohei Ohtani kidding?
Let's wait until after the season to revisit extending Alvy. It helps with the 2024 budget and gives Stearns a year to "evaluate."

I was thinking that the Mets can get it done in January of 2025.
Wait a year isn't to either sides advantage.
Okay, I misunderstood the parameters.
