"due to their excessive spending"--I would put it this way: "due to an amount spent on salaries that exceeded the artificial boundaries created by parsimonious owners".

Gooden is right in his comments. The previous regime's so called leadership resulted in the teams downward spiral in 2023 and the effects of Eppler's leadership & decisions will continue to haunt the Mets for years to come. I still hold out hope that Stearns & Co can turn the direction of this franchise around. However, given what Stearns inherited that turnaround is going to take at least 2-3 years to accomplish. There are still too many holes to fill in the '24 roster for the Mets to think that they can compete with the Braves for a division title.

If Mauricio could take the 3B job in Spring Training and run with it that would be huge. The DJ Stewart/Vientos DH combo isn’t sexy but it could work. Anything’s better than Vogey

In Basbeball and IMO - drafting 1 or 30 doesnt matter - its a huge crap shoot.

Point taken, but I have a strong preference for a top 5 pick. Oh well! The odds of getting a ML player are significantly higher. But there are no guarantees, as we know.

And again: The right developmental system is possibly the most important aspect of all (assuming comparable talent levels). Some guys fail with one organization who maybe would have succeeded elsewhere, with better support; and vice versa.

This is an area where Cohen's money will go untaxed and can make a real difference. I hope Stearns can help build it.

But yes I agree mlb ten spots doesn’t really matter it’s all about development

Thank you so much for the quick response. This contract sounds very similar to the hockey 2 way contract.I just never heard this type of contract in baseball. Thanks again Wendy.

You’re very welcome. The language is different but I have noticed other similarities between baseball and hockey contracts, too. Free agents who have a Qualifying Offer are not free agents. They’re restricted free agents. They should be labeled RFA’s but baseball likes to make everything look rosy.

I really hope that the Mets can figure things out, the MLB is so much better when they're a great team. Gonna be hard to get past the Dodgers' fat wallets though, sick and tired of them loading up every damn year. Great article though.

Fedde can hide on the south side of Chicago. Why would he want to go to a team that has expectations of him? He’s riding out his career in the slow lane.

Who else is getting testy with the Shohei Ohtani watch?
