Overall, a good contract for Nimmo and DeGrom sure looks strange in that Texas uniform. This is not how I thought it would end as I thought it would be the other way around. Eppler did a good thing with Uncle Stevie’s money. As a Mets Fan from the beginning and never a Yankee fan, I only have one question for you, “Why would you not like an owner who is willing to spend lot get the right team to try and win a championship?” Just sayin! Let’s Go METS!!! LGM
I'm glad they brought Nimmo back; there was no reasonable replacement for him. We were all wondering if the Mets could bring back their three big FA's; well they kind of did if you insert Verlander for deGrom. Different times.
Heavily investing financially at this point makes all sorts of sense since it'll take 3-5 years to build up the entire farm system to be Dodger/Astro-like (which is the goal). This gives me confidence that they will also lock up their other home grown stars down the line; Alonso being the main guy on the current roster.
We have come quite a way from where Robertson would have been the biggest offseason add to where he wasn't even the biggest add the hour that he was signed.
I am going to enjoy being hated by the baseball world to the fullest extent of the law. Bring it on, baby. I have been waiting for this my entire life. NYC is a national league town and it always has been. #LFGM
I think deGrom is just going through the motions. We should be thanking him for not leaving us with this problem: a high paid pitcher who cannot pitch. I think he wanted a big payday because he missed out earlier in his career and this was the last chance. He can probably cobble enough together to make the first two years of the contract less regrettable but I think he knows it can all be over with one pitch.
Signing Nimmo is the most 'Not Wilpon' thing since Cohen took over. We gave a dude who isn't on a hall of fame track or coming off league leading accolades an offer in FA and resigned him. He's potentially a Met for Life. That's huge. Says a lot to McNeil, Alonso, Guillorme, Peterson, Smith kids in the minors that the Mets won't let you leave if you're producing and valuable. I am very pleased with this signing.
A friend of mine is a disgruntled Padre fan who doesn't seem to understand why players are not signing w/ SD when offered more $ and more years. I have a theory it's got to do w/ Preller and how he handled Hosmer's exit over 18 months and the free for all that is Tatis Jr. but he doesn't like that kind of talk, lol. He seems to think the Mets and the Padres share a model of: spend no matter what, damn the taxes and the consequences! (I can see Boras dressed as John Henry somewhere in a bad re-enactment play of 1776 saying this.)
I disagree with my friend's position the Mets don't care. Based on numbers - if you take away the $24 to Cano, after all this spending the Mets are under $300M. This is before arbitration of course. The Mets are course correcting and year 1 and 2 of Cohen will be higher spending years because we've got a bottom half farm system with only one or 2 MLB ready prospects and three others we could trade. We've not spent well under Sandy 1.0 and BVW. The deals made for building the bullpen and trading org. depth mean we have to spend now to have a team.
I don't think the Mets are going to blow through the cap all the time. The lack of quality draft picks as a result is huge. I think we will be a midway point between LAD (allowing players to walk who then get uber contracts and skillfully resign replacements thanks to scouting/analytics for midtier or 'cast off' guys that are actually good, not just cheap.) and Boston (letting Mookie go) - which we already did in letting Jake walk.
I think the Mets will continue spending 'behind the scenes' on scouting, analytics, and development and focus on international draft pool in the short term to address minimal high value picks as we sign FAs this year and maybe next year. I think the 2-year deals with opt outs for Max and JV are important for resetting the salary cap. I think they will both not make it through year 3 unless we win the WS and bring back the same team the next 2 years. I see the Mets more willing to trade salary like McCann or Escobar with one of our more 'top grade prospects' and ride out Baty or Alvarez from Day 1 if all the other pieces are in place.
I like our rule 5 guy for pitching depth. Robertson's deal is the same price as May the last two years, that seems a good fit.
Jake leaving is good for him; the Rangers met his years and his dollars. That's the American Way. Screw the people mad at him for not choosing NY b/c rangers aren't a winning team or for $. His personality and the Media never fit. I'm sure that factored into his decision. Time to close that book, and root for the dude not the laundry because on his best day he's God's Pitching Gift to Man. Thanks to the new NBA style schedule, we can still see him every year and every other year in Queens.
Great article as always. Good time to be a Mets fan, but don't get complacent on ramifications and consequences of 'Uncle Stevie' time. I will not be surprised if we aren't in on big FAs next year or splashing at the deadline again to offset the big contracts the last two winters.

Thanks again for another great article 👍
Great work and LFGM
Nice work... minor note: Joely Rodríguez is now on the Red Sox.

You could be right - but really the guy just turned out to be a bad guy in Mets History - Like Mike Hampton - wanted better school system - ya right !
I know. Can’t get around that, right? He has been mute for two years and that’s the first thing out of his mouth?
