I thought this was a good deadline. The Athletic put it very well, you're allowed to feel disappointed but also happy about the result of it. Stearns bolstering our bullpen -- both via acquisitions and getting off of bad contracts/players quickly to give young guys a chance -- has been very impressive. I am not sure I'd say its a strength of ours yet, but we definitely have the types of guys you want pitching in October. It's really too bad Raley got hurt.

I would suggest you look at Adam Ottavino's advanced stats. They profile very much like someone Stearns would ironically target: https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/adam-ottavino-493603?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb

His xERA is only 3, xBA is .200, high strike out rate and low exit velocity. Also seems to add leadership in the dugout.

I think he's here to stay. Zuber acquisition only makes sense if he can be an option next year, so they will have to figure out how to keep him on the roster for two weeks in August.

In Stearns we trust!

FanGraphs shows Zuber having only one minor league option remaining. But looking closer, I believe he might have two, which would better explain why he was already optioned today.

This would make a lot more sense!

We began the year not expecting much and now half way through, somehow we got much. I get the sense we have adults running the show and the trading deadline moves prove you can improve without mortgaging the future. I'm all in, just thrilled we have a season after all.

Stearns took players going nowhere and put them on a team that is going places. The adrenaline rush for all of them must be incredible. Plus, they are all going to finally taste good pizza. Here’s to the rag tag band of bullpen brothers and may they secure innings 6-9 for the duration. Now let’s go make some noise.

Can never underestimate the power of good pizza...

Brazobán is the guy who excites me. Really good stuff and years of team control left. Blackburn seems like a poor man’s Bassitt? Kind of what I expected from Stearns at this year’s deadline. Needed OF depth and pitching and that’s what he got. At this stage of the long term plan, there’s no reason to empty the farm system for a run at it this year. Besides, the current roster just keeps winning. Let’s go for the matinee sweep over a very good Twins team. LGM!

This is exactly what I expected from Stearns and uncle Steve. Megil may find himself in the minors again and could be the arm they being up but there’s no way he stays in this rotation. Petersen is also on notice and he better bring his A+ game the next time he toes the rubber or he could find himself in another position too. Otto is on his way out. I think his arm is done. He would never say it I’m sure but it’s failing him and you can see it on his face the ball isn’t going where it used to and while frustrating for him it winds up hurting the team and he’s gotta go. Brazoban has nasty stuff I like that pick up and now that he’s in the chase I think he will dial it up a notch and be really good (praying). It’s time for everyone to push it so I don’t see a six man rotation. Manaea pitched great last nite but he’s not going to have the same umpire behind the dish and he was the benefit from his strike zone in a big way. The twins came in being a team that supposedly crushes the off speed stuff but getting nothing but a big dose of that the last two nights you could’ve fooled me. Sevy has been great and I’d like to see him come back honestly but I guess we will see what happens. Let’s get the sweep! Let’s Go Mets!

Ottavino is on thin ice, but I don't think Mets need to force that decision until somebody -- Garrett, Reid-Foley, etc -- is healed and ready to contribute. I hate to declare anyone "done" prematurely. What's the Dylan line? "It's not dark yet, but it's getting there."

With days off, they won't need a spot start for a couple of turns through the rotation. We'll see where we are at.

Glad to have Butto up our sleeve as a potential starter, especially if these newly acquired arms can do the job. Be great if they can get Stanek right.

Oddsmakers saying the Mets have a 50% chance of making the WC seems accurate to me. Padres are tough. DiamondBacks getting their groove back. The Braves are the Braves. Somehow the Cards hang in there. And the Pirates, with that staff, are closer than they appear in the rear view mirror.

Loving the Mets bats, the length of the lineup.

I used to say about Baty that he never helps us win games. He was just a guy along for the ride. Once again, last night Mark Vientos made an impact on the outcome. The difference has been night and day and probably the single-most important reason for the Mets turnaround.

These guys they brought in certianly don't get me excited BUT its at least something they did to try and change the bullpen minimally. With sp injuries they had no choice but to bring in a couple of sps.

First, do no harm. Stearns has a light but deft touch.

I think we did well. I like all of the deals with possible exception of the Blackburn, and Zuber is an unknown but seems promising. I’m not sure really how we can fit all these guys in our bullpen if and when all are healthy. Otto I think will have to go, and I’m ok with that. I don’t want to DFA SRF, who has no options. And there’s not room for either of the lefties named Young.

I’m glad we didn’t mortgage the farm. I’m ok with trading top prospects for outstanding controllable talent but not for rentals or mediocre players. Some organizations did just that.

Just a contrary note about "mortgaging the farm," which I find awfully overblown (and not picking on you, since everyone uses that terminology). When I look at the Mets prospect list, I see Sproat and I see, to a lesser degree, Jett Williams, whose value has to be diminished because of missing a year to wrist injury. Yes, there are other interesting guys who might be good: Gilbert, Clifton, Mauricio, Baty. I'm not sure there's much of a farm to be mortgaged. Or much to get another team truly excited. But I'm glad that we're working on building it up. I hope Ziegler has a full recovery next season.

I think if the Mets were truly WS contenders, I would have badly wanted one of the top two relievers (we never replaced Raley) that went to the Phils and Padres at high cost. This wasn't the year for that *missing piece*, IMO.

Agree with the last paragraph so much.

Just to add: Going into the season, I had anticipated the Mets getting an injection of youthful talent from the minor league system. Getting help from within. So I saw Gilbert and Acuna arriving, and I saw Vasil and Hamel getting spot starts, with maybe one of them being actually good. Maybe a quality reliever would emerge. Instead, we got zero from them. However, that's not to discount huge contributions from Vientos and Butto. I had just hoped there would be more. And clearly, it's not like we have all that much that other teams want. Hopefully we'll get more internal help in 2025. I like the expensive international signings.

No doubt it’s been a disappointing season for many Met prospects, especially the hitters. But it’s too soon to give up on them (except maybe Ramirez, who has had two bad years). Many prospects don’t make it-and that’s why you need lots of them. And some of the lower ranked prospects rapidly improve. DeGrom, for example, was considered a good but not elite prospect.

Love all the moves. Trust in Stearns after seeing what Padres Astros and Orioles gave up for pitching I am fine with that they did.

I'm happy with the deadline approach.

Zuber seems like a minor league guy to me, especially since I can't see the Mets not carrying a single LH in the pen. That was the oddest trade for me.

If there's a flaw in the totality of the deals, it's that we didn't acquire a quality LH reliever.

Going with Stanek in the 8th last night was scary. Pete has been having a terrible time with that throw all season. The errors usually go to the pitchers, unfairly, but the problem has been Pete's inability to deliver an accurate, *timely* throw to the covering pitcher. The key is the pitcher receives the ball with enough time to then look down for the base. Oh, well!

Glad to see Mendoza bring in Diaz in the 8th, game on the line in that moment. And, also, Stanek needs to build on whatever modest success he can. From what I saw, the offspeed stuff is currently a mess and he's not able to throw it for strikes. So he becomes an aggressive FB pitcher in the 96 mph range.

He gives me Trevor May vibes.

Brazoban seems like the key pickup -- 11th hour -- with team control through 2028. Feels to me like the best of the bunch.

I approve of the upgrade from Stewart to Winker.
