It all feels like a dream, especially after reading the recap. I am surprised you didn’t file from London! The 2024 Mets: no panic, just stick to the plan. Hat tip to Mendy for keeping these guys focused. The umpiring chart is insane and I hope MLB removes this guy for the next round. Let’s Go Mets!
Why, with his umpire scorecard was this guy selected to do a playoff game anyway? Note: If there is a Game #5 guess who will be the person calling balls & strikes? Sigh.
I don't comment much on these all that often, but I've been a subscriber since the beginning and I read the newsletter every single day and listen to the pod as well. Love the thoughtful analysis from you guys day in and day out. I know it must be a ton of work. Appreciate you guys! Last, but not least, LET'S GO METS!
Hey Bobby! Thanks so much for being a loyal reader (and listener). Really appreciate the kind words. The Mets make it a lot easier to produce content these days when they are playing like this!
Wheeler was fifth in chase rate during the season. Sanchez was first. So, while the Mets so far haven’t figured him out it’s possible if they make the guy throw strikes we can go to Citi field up 2-0. I’m aware that’s a big ask with the pressure of the playoffs and those shadows we have seen it all season the Mets swing a lot at pitches out of the zone. We have made some very ordinary pitchers look like aces. Sanchez has had a great year and with his chase rate being first I’m expecting the same type of game today. If we can get him out of the game as early as possible I’d say that bodes well for us. Sevy needs to be great too. The Mets take that pass the baton mantra seriously when the chips are down. Let’s not have too big of a hole to climb out from and put up another crooked number late bring in Diaz and come home needing one! Sounds like a good plan to me. Let’s go Mets.
To confuse & perplex as in the Mets have confused & perplexed most everyone by their recent playoff run. Hopefully they will confuse & perplex all the way to the World Series!
McNeil can only help, but agree with JB. Help off the bench. Not that I’d replace Acuna. I’d drop one pitcher. We don’t need both Otto and Young, two guys who are only there to mop up, especially if Senga is a starter and we expect him to approach 5 IP.
JB also likes to point out put away pitches. It seems like those two Philly relievers couldn’t put out guys away after getting ahead 0-2. I wonder if it’s because Wheeler was so good, he got our guys ready for that level. Anyone coming after him probably looked second rate.
Yes, Lindor is a master! The Mets as a whole have also been masters in coming back from seemingly impossible deficits to then win the damn game! Can they do it again today against a pitcher they haven't beaten all year? We shall see shan’t we? Oh, and if the Mets do somehow win today's game to take a 2-0 lead against the Phils in this best of 5 series I WOULD NOT get too confident about them winning 1 of the next 3 games to go on to the NLCS. The Phillies are a quality team that are very able to win 3 in a row to take the series. That said, I am also just as confident in my Mets to play the Phillies close and hard in each and every game. Of course, I am rooting for my Mets to take 3 in a row to move on to the NLCS & it just might happen! After this crazy season I wouldn't dismiss the Mets from doing the exact opposite of what most non-Mets fans are thinking. #LGM #LFGM!
I think Bader gets the start over Taylor vs. the LHP, and it's time.
Winker had the best overall approach -- not chasing -- in his ABs. Mendoza has a decision to make here, where conventional wisdom slides in JD Martinez.
I'm not pining for Jeff McNeil, personally.
They competed decently against Wheeler, but looked a little anxious. He'll do that. It's unfortunate about the shadows.
In regards to the charts, I see Megill in the pen rather than as a starter. He's very much in play today. My expectation is to see him unless Severino goes deep.
If he proves his readiness, I suppose McNeil is candidate for NLCS . . . if we can get there. Right now, the vibes are immaculate.
The built-in rest days of NLDS are enough. I don't "rest" Iglesias so long as he continues to compete well.
You know, I've figured out why teams didn't sign him and keep cutting/trading him. He's a free-swinger. From that perspective, he doesn't walk enough. So much of his value is tied into intangibles that can't be measured. And even the flawed defensive metrics don't jive with the eye test. The game is getting faster and more athletic, especially at that position, and he's a throwback. But as we saw with Sandy, who hated Murphy (also a free swinger), there is a school of GM that loathes guys who don't take pitches.
I too am not pining for McNeil. I’m hoping they can package him for someone in the off season. Seeing him be one reason why Iglesias stayed in AAA I’m not seeing how he plays over him now. He’s not a better outfielder than Taylor or Marte. Acuna has better speed in a pinch running situation. Hard choices.

Amen. I completely agree with you.

Great “morning after” read! One question what does obfuscating mean lol

You can't drop a pitcher for a positional player - 13 of each is the roster requirement.

OMG not a full time player tho think he needs a break - McNeil would help

I will take any help that could & would help the Mets going forward and yes, McNeil wil help even if only insofarserving as a bench piece and PH.

Yes, but McNeil can play multiple positions and a guy like him is VERY valuable to a team in case of injury.
It's a no brainer to replace Acuna with McNeil if he is ready. We could use another proven left handed bat. Acuna's time will come.
