Well, I did not know about the first pitch until I read this! I don't care what she said or about the celebrity she has built since, but I think it's not a good look for the Mets to propagate.

I guess it's a thing.

One of the pleasures of getting older -- I'm 63 -- is you look at some new things and shrug, fuck it, I'm just going to ignore that.

I used to tell my father that he should get a laptop. Get online. Join the modern world. And he'd sit there with his newspaper open to the stock market listings, making little marks w/ a pencil, sipping Johnnie Walker on ice, perfectly content. It's not that he didn't understand or realize there was a brave new world out there that he could join. He was capable. But he did the math and figured, Why bother learning about computers when I'll be dead in 20 years anyway.

Let the great world spin without me.

Hawk tuah.

I like your father. I am not offended and you're right, why bother wishing things were a bit more highbrow when I will most likely be dead in 20 years? (I'm 64.)

Social media stars shouldn't throw out first pitches in my mind. Nothing against that young woman but aren't there more deserving options?

i just like to know who thought this was a good idea ? I have nothing against Hawk Tuah girl she is cashing in on her new found fame but why would an organization who the owner is trying to change the culture from bubbling fools to respected franchise green light this .

Yesterday should be remembered as the dagger for the season. The bright spots will be Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos. The Braves look like they are putting things together with Harris back and other injured players behind him. The Mets handed that game to the A’s and that’s exactly how it should be remembered. Quintana was terrible. He took over 20 pitches to get through every inning but one and when Bleday hit that GS you could feel the team and fans wilt. We might make the playoff push close but I’m not expecting to even get there. With the whole staff giving away free passes at the rate they are it’s not sustainable and it showed how that comes around to bite you in grand fashion yesterday. If you are a Mets fan as we all are I’ll watch the games just to see who finishes on a high note but this team will be markedly different next year aside from a few pieces and I hope Chavez and his whole hitting team find the door. Why Hefner has kept his job is getting a bit baffling too. If Mendy wishes to be more than a 2 year manager he will shake up that staff. Time to win is now with the core we have. Let’s see what happens over the winter and next spring but I expect BIG changes.

Mendoza inherited a staff. At the end of this season, he'll be more equipped to bring in his guys. A new hitting coach -- maybe? -- and a new pitching coach -- probably. It all depends on the finish. We don't know on August 16th.

“should” is fatalastic. They’re only 2 out of the 3d WC spot so I’m thinking “could”.

I'll preface my comment with I like Pete Alonso alot I know he is extremely charitable and a home grown Met along with being goofy in a good way but it may be the prudent baseball move to let him go off into the baseball sunset after the season. The question David Stearns and his staff have to answer is are the Mets better off with Vientos going forward as the first baseman and upgrading at 3rd base in the off season. The money saved on not resigning Alonso could be better spent on a top SP1 (Corbin Burnes) and a big outfield bat (Juan Soto)

Commenting on the podcast this morning and thanks as always guys.

Looking to next year, Starling Marte should only play OF against lefties at best unless his mobility out there has changed in some appreciable way. He should be the primary DH the rest of the time.

The primary OF rotation should be Nimmo and Bader (who they should QO) and ideally Soto. If not Soto, I would get the best 1-2 year rental possible and consider using Nimmo as your primary CF and getting another strong corner.

Interesting that the day after the first-pitch surprise media star is launched on CitiField's cherished mound that The Athletic prints a story on the Mets unexpected promotional surprises from Mr. Weiner to Grimace to OMG. Hmmm... timing is everything; if only the Athletic could have waited one more day.

I'm with Evan Roberts on this one: If thwy don't sweep the Marlins, it's over. We have brutal 10 game stretch coming up after that and there won't be "meaningful games in September". STILL, i ever expected this Team to play and succeed the way they did from the 2nd London Game until the Allstar Break. And i am thankful for that.

“📲 MEME WORLD: Yes, that was the Hawk Tuah Girl, Hailey Welch, throwing out the first pitch on Thursday.”

I had never heard of “Hawk Tuah Girl” until now. I had to look it up. And, here I am barely 50 years old, yet officially becoming the old man shaking at clouds. I have never (not even during the Wilpon era) in all my 41 years rooting passionately for the Mets ever been this embarrassed to be a Mets fan. I suppose this was supposed to be funny or trendy. Nevertheless, I find myself instead dumbfounded and borderline angry. There are teachers, first responders, nonprofit founders, and other inspiring figures who could be called upon to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Yet, this is the best the Mets could do. The Mets don’t need my money or fandom. I am aware enough to know that no one here or anywhere cares what I think about this. So, I shake my fists at the clouds with the sincere hope that I can encourage someone somewhere (whether at the Mets or anywhere) to just do better.

Many fans agree with you and this sentiment will be shared with management. The Mets chose her (as opposed to the people who buy their opportunity to throw out the first pitch). They should choose better. I mean, I was there and there are no viral videos of me discussing fellatio - choose me!

When you do the math, look at it dispassionately, of course there's time.

There's 25% of the season left to play and the Mets are a mere 2 games out of the WC.

Even teams that are up by 5 games can be caught. Baseball history is rife with such things.

OTOH, there are those times when we look at a team and imagine that we see into its soul. I think many of us -- not all -- did this in the 2023 traded deadline. We supported the sell-off because we decided this team didn't have it in them. A leap of faith or, I guess, a leap of unfaith.

The season is not over for this team. And as far as divining its "soul," I don't know that it's been revealed as yet. They might be what their record says they are. Almost good enough.

I'm not betting the house. But I'm not getting up and walking away from the table. Let's play out the hand and see where we are at. I'll continue to be a fan.

In the pre-season, I picked them for 84 wins -- totally 100% believed they could be "competitive" -- but suspected that 84 would not be enough for a WC. When looked at from that perspective, things are playing out as expected. Forget the highs and the lows, look at the big picture.

25% of the season is the 4th lap of the mile. There's so much time left.

This is, theoretically, the "fun" we hoped to have. The joys of baseball.

Dear Lord save us from the joys of baseball!
