Jeff , I’m a subscriber and I think you do a great job . But , “ middle school when Mets made Piazza trade “ ? Good God , I’m old . If you ever need info from mid-1960’s onward , I’d be glad to share .
This is second biggest acquisition when considering both context and surprise, since Carter. Carter was out of the blue when we were primed for a long run, turning us into instant favorites. He moved our calendar up. Obviously Soto is gonna be here for a much longer time, but we’ve been counting on this for a long time too. Not a surprise line the Carter trade.
Tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of that trade. Maybe we celebrate it by pulling off a trade for Freddie Freeman. That would be a much closer comp.
Since the end of the 2024 season I have refrained from commenting here on Mets Fix, taking the approach that signings & building of the 2025 team would take care of itself in due time. Oh boy, has it ever taken care of itself with this particular signing! Yes, there is certainly much more work to due before Spring Training 2025 begins but with this Soto signing it has gotten off to a fantastic start! Compared to this same time last year, I have complete faith in Stearns & Co to complete the jigsaw puzzle that is the 2025 Mets right down to the last piece to complete a masterpiece puzzle. Let the winter meetings begin in earnest and let the mantra of the 2025 season be World Series or bust! #LFGM #LetsGoMets !
December 8th is a bummer date for us old rockers - The day the music died - John Lennon left us. Now 12/8 for me will always be remembered for the NY Mets - our NY Mets signing Juan Soto ! The contract is ridiculous and the guy doesnt care where he plays as long as its a dollar more but thats what is costs to do business and beat out the other teams. Beating out those teams like The Red Sox and Yankees (where i live ) is great !
Staggering contract for a staggering free agent. This is really A-Rod 24 years later in terms of age and ability, so the contract, similarly, is a brand new bench mark. I'll worry about 2039 when that time comes; by then my three elementary school aged children will be done with or finishing up college; that's a long long time from now.
I never believed that he'd walk away from the Yankees, so long as they were competitive.
I was wrong about that.
A great hitter, I'm thrilled we have him.
The contract is horrendous but I guess that isn't supposed to matter today. Let's hope he ages extremely well.
Is he our future first baseman?
The Mets organization had to be extremely unhappy about ticket sales last season. Coming off a 75-win season, and a quiet winter, the numbers were embarrassing. The revenue was not anywhere it needs to be. This move squarely addresses that problem in a way that Stearns' "magic on the margins" never would have touched.
this is awesome, and I'm usually the cautiously optimistic one! after the initial fervor is passed, please do an article on how we're going to develop sustainable pitching after giving this much $ to the offense and we're on Year 4 of Hefner in charge who has yet to show he can replicate success with pitchers year over year. Sandy came back and traded pitching depth in minors for dudes that didn't work out. We've tried overpaying pitchers, we've scraped together veterans that are all 4-5 guys in a rotation, but it's not sustainable. My only concern with this is we waste more years of Lindor greatness and the peak years of Soto due to pitching.
Thanks J.B. for a fabulous overview of what brought us to celebrate this amazing moment in Mets history. I mentioned in the chat last night that this almost makes up for losing Tom Seaver many years ago. Personally, not sure my longevity will outlast his contract but I think I will get the best years for sure.
As to what really motivated him to choose us and not "the evil empire"? I think he wanted to be the "Top Dog" for all that money -- not the case in the Judge's chambers.
Does this signing now suggest Queens is the new destination if the Dodgers don’t inquire about you? Or can’t match as even they have limits. Is Rori far behind? Wouldn’t that be orgasmic? I’ve been saying it for a very long time this F/A period started and ended with Soto. We have him now. There’s no reason to believe he said to them I’m not coming there to just be your best hitter. The teams you put together better be productive and playing for championships. I gotta believe promises were made to get that signature. Let’s get going Mets!

I remember watching Sports Channel when we got Carter!

To those who ever questioned Steve Cohen, I hope you now finally understand how lucky we are as Mets fans to have him as our owner.
Juan Soto is a New York Met. Unbelievable!!!!

OK, now I’m in favor of the Golden At Bat!
Just kidding…
LOL

I’ll be about to take Social Security!
Its about the next 5 years -

It’s no coincidence I received a “2025 single game tickets are now on sale” email from the Mets this morning.
I agree re: attendance. This easily puts 7.5-10K more people in the seats.
"Juan Soto, the Ted Williams of our generation, is a New York Met. Do we really have to say anything else?"
No.
Let’s restrict him from jumping up and down in Winter Ball.

Juan Soto is a New York Met! Join us for a very happy edition of "National League Town". #LGM #Mets

Wow, thanks for the great historical context analysis of the stats!
It’s also worth noting that he’s been durable, unlike Trout for example. He’s worth nothing if he’s not in the lineup.
A joyful recap. Hope everyone enjoys basking in this today.
Also a great reminder that the Mets STILL have a ton of spending flexibility based on prior payrolls. Winter meetings should be fun
Great writing. Woo hoo!
