🚀 TAKING OFF: Brett Baty goes from hitting like Rey Ordoñez to David Wright when he moves from the majors to Triple-A. Wearing a sleeveless jersey, his 414-foot bomb put Syracuse ahead late in last night’s game. He is now hitting .370 with five home runs and 15 RBIs with an eye-popping 1.195 OPS during his time in the minors this season.
📝 LINEUP CARD: Catcher Joe Hudson is expected to join the team in Chicago with Luis Torrens going on the paternity list.
🗓️ UP NEXT: A wild-card-race showdown with the fourth-place Cubs. Sounds funny? Welcome to the 2024 National League. Chicago is coming off a series in which they took two of three from the Giants as they try to right a ship that turned a 21–14 start into a 36–39 record.
It will be a tough first assignment this afternoon with Jose Quintana (2–5, 4.98) facing upstart lefty Shota Imanaga (7–1, 1.89).
Looking ahead, Luis Severino is lined up to face his Gerrit Cole and his former team on Tuesday.
🔗 Mets’ Jose Iglesias wrote a song called ‘OMG’ and players are obsessed with it, by Will Sammon, The Athletic ($): “Besides playing 12 years in the major leagues and once making an All-Star team, Iglesias, a 34-year-old from Cuba, creates Latin pop music under the name Candelita. He first introduced ‘OMG’ to the Mets as his walk-up tune upon joining the club from Triple-A Syracuse on May 31. Since then, the Mets (35-38) have coincidentally won 12 of 17 games.”
🔗 Mets' Brooks Raley wants to pitch in 2025 and beyond after Tommy John recovery, by Tim Healey, Newsday ($): “With a big brace on his arm and a tendon-turned-ligament freshly inserted into his elbow, Mets reliever Brooks Raley left no doubt. Next summer, when he will turn 37 and will have missed more than a year due to injury, he wants to resume his career and keep pitching. Raley had Tommy John surgery, a season-ending operation, last month. He is determined to make sure that is not the end. His plan, based on the timeline provided by his surgeon, Dr. Keith Meister: Throw off a mound by the spring to line up a midseason return. Then keep playing in the majors until he is at least 40.”

Nice of Healey to do an article cheering in Raley. But I think it’s obvious this was his plan, or he never would have had Tommy John surgery. And it makes sense. As a lefty reliever he should be able to find work for a few more years and the earnings will be very significant in the course of his working life. Why not?
