☀️ Good Morning:
We could open this newsletter by talking about the pitching, or the 25 runs over nine innings, or move off the field and discuss Steve Cohen’s casino plans or potential purchase of SNY.
We could talk about A.J. Minter.
We could talk about a 13-1 record at home.
But I’m going to start by talking about the defense.
The same defense we highlighted earlier in the week, the one that has committed the fewest errors in baseball despite looking unspectacular in doing so; that is, until last night.
🤯 The Mets have done a lot of Amazin’ things to start this season, but the most jaw-dropping, over-the-top sign that this is a special year might have come in the fourth inning on Tuesday.
Call up Rey Ordoñez to jog his memory, I can’t remember a defensive inning as good as this one.
It started with a lucky (skillful?) bounce:
It continued with Tyrone “Clark Kent” Taylor turning into Superman:
And ended with a patented pick by Francisco Lindor:
Three outrageous plays for three successive outs.
And that’s how this 2025 season has gone for the Amazins so far.
On a day they learned they might be without one of their best bullpen arms for the season, they responded with an ol’ fashioned ass whoopin’ of the Diamondbacks.
Some New Yorkers like to flee the cold for golf and warmth in Arizona. The Mets pretty much own the desert state’s baseball team. They are now 24–7 against the Snakes since September 2019, including 15–4 at home in that span.
They will try to add to that success with Brandon Waddell lined up for a spot start (or piggyback appearance) on Wednesday.

The baseball gods say you can’t win a division in April.
What about guaranteeing a winning season?
Through 30 games, a roster that is built like a post-WWII home situated in a booming suburb — modest, despite the home value — has the best record in baseball, with a chance to set a National League record for wins in April (20).
It is the franchise’s best start since 2006, when they won the division (and we know what happened from there). This 2025 squad is only one game shy of the ‘86 Mets’ pace.
As you can see in the table above, the Mets have won at least 18 of their first 30 games 15 times in their history. Only once (2002) have they failed to subsequently finish the season above .500.
Of the seven clubs that started with at least 20 wins, five of them ended up winning at least 97 games.
