☀️ Good Morning:
[Scene: A place where Mets fans meet; Timing: December 2024]
Emotionless Mets fan: Look, there’s no way you can justify giving Alonso a long-term deal. He’s an aging first baseman. He’s not even one of the best first basemen! There’s no reason for the Mets to cave. Stearns could always move Vientos to first and give Baty another shot at third, or sign a veteran to a one-year deal.

That emotionless fan got the main point right (at least for now): there was no reason to give Alonso a long-term deal. But what would this Mets team look like had they started the season with Mark Vientos learning first base and Brett Baty cemented at third?
Some say, I should warn for graphic content before suggesting such a thing.
Pete Alonso has put this team on his back with four multi-hit games over the past week. I called his game-tying home run last Wednesday in Miami A Swing to Remember because it made me think of the kind of moment they include in a Season-Review movie. I noted how the ‘86 Mets started 2–3 before embarking on an 11-game winning streak.
The 2025 Mets have won six in a row after starting 2–3. They are unbeaten at home and haven’t dropped a series at Citi Field since August of last year.
In a game moved to an earlier start time to try to avoid the cold, the Amazins are red hot. Yeah, it’s happy times in Queens.

Juan Soto has scored 10 runs this season. Pete Alonso has brought him home five times, including twice yesterday. A pretty straightforward formula for success.
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough thought walking Soto to load the bases for Alonso was somehow a good idea (he also inexplicably played the infield in with one out to try to save a run instead of catch Alonso in a double play). He paid a price.
Asked about the opportunity, Alonso told reporters: “I’m like, hell yeah. Alright. Let’s go. Time to execute a game plan.”
Alonso is in total control at the plate. He is waiting for his pitch and pouncing on it. You only need one chart to explain what we are seeing:
