☀️ GOOD MORNING:

June 1, 1962 - opening a newspaper instead of a newsletter, the result the same as the day before and the day before that and the ten days before that, a Mets loss, their 12th in a row in a season they would lose a long-standing 120 games.

June 1, 1967 - the newness of the lovable Mets starting to wear thin. Another losing streak, five in a row. A 14–27 record.

June 1, 1979 - a rare victory after an 8–18 May. The season over before school let out.

June 1, 1993 - the carryover of the Worst Team Money Could Buy. Draw your finger down the National League standings to find the Mets at 17–32.

We’ve been where the Rockies are right now. It’s in the Mets’ DNA. Losers. Bottom dwellers. #LOL. Out of contention by Memorial Day. The summer for that other team in New York.

Hopefully, that’s not lost on fans as they watch their favorite team take on Colorado from a park-view perch created by Steve Cohen. Yeah, their $765 million man has taken his time to start hitting. Yeah, the entire lineup could deliver a few more timely hits. Yeah, it’s not perfect. But it’s not that. It’s not June 1 and the season is already over. Those days, the opposite of what our car mirrors warns us — they are even farther away than they appear.

The Mets got a big hit from Juan Soto, an explosive night from Francisco Lindor and beat a team they should beat nine times of out of 10. We can celebrate that or relish how a franchise born as lovable losers has become a perennial contender.

⏲️ TIME WILL COME

“Do I think he’s trying to do too much right now? Yeah, I think he’s probably trying to do too much right now.”

That was David Stearns while answering question after question about his expensive offseason signing. Juan Soto hasn’t been Juan Soto. We’ve covered it on a daily basis in this newsletter, while constantly reminding everyone that eventually he will come around. Even if Soto isn’t magnificent in his debut season with the Mets, we know he can at least be better than what he has been over the past two months.

Hitless in 17 at-bats, Soto got his mojo going with an RBI double to score Francisco Lindor from first base. It was one of two hits on the night.

HUMBLING: “I know I’ve been struggling, and I haven't been there for them, but I will be,” Soto told reporters after the game. “It’s a matter of time, we don’t know when it's gonna come through, but I'm going to keep working.”
