☀️ Good Morning:

It’s a much better day to be a Mets fan than a Jets fan, and I know many of you are both. To help you navigate Aaron Glenn’s mess, make sure you check out The Jets Way by David Wyatt-Hupton.

Today, we will touch on Freddy Peralta’s introduction and examine whether Nolan McLean can sustain his impressive performance from last year.

📰 ABOVE THE FOLD

⇢ MEET FREDDY

Freddy Peralta introduced himself to the media on Tuesday with the typical platitudes you would expect from these press conferences.

However, I thought his answer on the possibility of signing an extension was interesting:

“I just got here. I think that I got to share time with my teammates, think about different ideas,” Peralta said. “Learn about everybody -- coaches, the organization in general. And then we can see.”

He could have completely deflected the question. He could have tried to curry early favor with the fans by saying he hopes to play here for a long time. Instead, he gave an honest answer. I’ll take it.

Peralta is in the final club option year of the five-year extension he signed just before the pandemic.

More from Freddy

▪️ On playing in New York: “It’s a different market, different city,” Peralta said. “There’s a lot more fans, a lot more people watching. Being honest, I like the competition that we’re going to face here. I’ve been around, obviously, watching for years what it is to be part of that big-market team. I’m excited to be part of the team.”

▪️ Did you know he was a Mets fan? “I think number one, I was a fan of the New York Mets,” he said. “Also, I’m really happy because I know that I’m going to be playing next to some superstars like Soto and other guys like [Bo] Bichette. Those guys, it’s going to be nice. It’s going to be great to be around those guys. What makes me feel good too is playing for New York where we have a bunch of Latinos. They make us get better. They challenge us to be better every day, because they ask to win. And that’s what we need to do. We need to win to get to the World Series.”

💪 “I’m ready for this,” Peralta said. “I feel proud to be here and be part of the New York Mets team.”

📈 DEEP DIVE

⇢ THE REAL MCLEAN

Nolan McLean was everything the Mets could have asked for and more last season.

The question is whether the “and more” sticks.
