Inch by Inch
Morning Dose: Thursday, May 7
☀️ Good Morning:
Far West.
Underneath the snow.
Late in the night.
Out of Mind.
That’s not a poem.
That’s how the New York Mets are trying to turn around their season.
While most New Yorkers have their attention focused on the professional basketball team, the written-off baseball team is building a winning streak.
After scoring a month full of runs in the near freezing temperatures of Colorado, the Amazins have won three in a row and four of their last five.
Daylight is still a distant sight — the Mets start the day eight games below .500 and 11 games back of the Braves — but some positive signs are starting to show.
Freddy Peralta escaped multiple jams to throw five shutout innings, Marcus Semien busted out with four hits, Carson Benge continues to hit, as does Bo Bichette and Francisco Álvarez.
The win also moved the Mets out of MLB’s cellar, putting them 1/2 game ahead of the Giants and Rockies. We never imagined they would be playing to stay out of last place on May 7, but here we are. Hopefully, they can put Colorado in the rear-view mirror.
🗓️ UP NEXT: Carlos Mendoza’s group looks to make it four in a row and five out of six since the front office put their faith behind him ahead of this current road trip. Christian Scott (0–0, 4.26) will try to build off his last stellar performance against old friend José Quintana (1–2, 4.07), whose best outing (and only win) of the young season came against the Mets back in New York.
