☀️ Good Morning:

If only we could turn Pete Alonso’s free agency into a financial security, or some kind of crypto coin that would allow us to bet on the day-to-day movement of his market.

At least we could make some money off this ridiculous process of guessing where, when and how much his next contract will be.

On Thursday, multiple Mets reporters indicated Alonso was “deep” in talks with Toronto and the two sides appeared to be “advancing” towards a possible marriage, although with no guarantee a deal would actually get done. Max Scherzer’s name even got thrown in the mix by another reporter.

By 6:00 PM EST (after-hours trading), two Sportsnet reporters for the Blue Jays said “there’s no momentum toward a deal on either player right now” and it “wouldn’t be accurate to say talks are progressing.”

Talks between the Polar Bear and his homegrown team reportedly broke down over a “last-ditch” three-year, $70 million offer from the Mets. Andy Martino adds that offer included deferrals, so the ~$68-70 million figure was in net present value; Alonso would have been paid more in nominal dollars.

And on we go to a new day of negotiations and Hot Stove trading.
