Mets fans were bursting with pride and enthusiasm last night. Conversations about Benge even occurred in restrooms! Haven’t felt that since Opening Day.
Thanks for shouting out those late 90's Mets teams, an exciting era that was completely overshadowed by the Yankees. The 1999 team-- Olerud, Alfonzo, Ventura, and Ordonez around the infield-- remains my favorite Mets team ever, and I've seen them all.
It was a great night at Shea! Everyone was in such a good mood and engaged with the game. I'm so excited about Benge who is just a human highlight show sometimes.
Okay, please understand I say this stuff every day while happy with the current winning. So, broken record guy here. Every game counts yet this team played Benge is LF to play Brett Baty in RF(!!!!!).
More than once.
I never saw anything close to a good reason given. Did that cost them a game, or two? Don’t know, I know it was another needless handicap done to winning games before this team was buried in the standings.
So many unfathomable things done that torpedoed this season.
I want Benge to win ROY so we get a PPI pick. The consensus seems to be Wetherholt but I can’t see it based on the numbers. Benge’s poor start to season cost him publicity. But let’s not forget the pulchritudinous catch!
The other thing is that those throws were perfect. If they’d been just a little off line the runners score and no one would be talking about the velocity now (and the Mets lose). And Alvarez did his part.
In a season of many decisions going poorly, at least the way that Benge was handled (starting the year on the ML roster, sticking with him when he was hitting .100 for a month) has seemed to have worked out.
JB, I'm basically your age - I was never more excited than I was during the offseason between the 95 and 96 season. I remember basically counting down the days until it started. They had finished the 95 season pretty well (I remember a sign in the stands equating '86 with the upcoming '96) and had added a few pieces in the offseason. Alas, didn't work out - but the pre-season excitement was fun!
I am very confused about this velocity measure. Is it the velocity the ball leaves hand or the velocity it arrives at the plate, or are we looking the entire miles/hour of the throw, which I’ve always assumed is the case with pitches which travel neither for miles or hours either, but at least have a constant distance and variable time to enable us to compare one pitcher to another. I won’t even mention that the outfielder is moving at some speed when he catches and releases drawing questions about V0 as well as overall T

I think Benge has a shot, especially as Wetherholt has been fading badly.
I never heard of Wetherholt so it’s an odd consensus

Alvarez deserves a ton of credit for being perfectly positioned.

That was awesome to watch last night.

Oh and the D is variable. Significantly variable.
Easier to say Benge has a great arm? No?
