☀️ Good Morning:

“It’s different in that around this time last free agency, I was signed or just about to sign,” free agent starter Lucas Giolito told host Rob Bradford on the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast.

“This time, it’s crickets.”

And that sums up where things stand in free agency.

We should be close to learning about one top target, with Japanese right-hander Tatsuya Imai’s posting window closing on Friday. The 27-year-old met with teams in Los Angeles, according to The Athletic, but it’s unclear which particular teams. On a recent BR Walk Off appearance, MLB insider Jon Heyman noted the Mets are “slightly connected” to Imai. Nobody seems to have a good feel on his market.

📈 DEEP DIVE

⇢ WHY WE CARE

I’ve been thinking about the different conversations surrounding the Mets this offseason, and one topic, in particular, sticks out to me above the rest.

That is the question of what makes fans happy.

After all, that’s what this whole thing is about, isn’t it? You don’t open up a baseball newsletter when there’s snow on the ground if you weren’t searching for something to make you feel good. It’s a timeless dopamine hit, originally found in inky afternoon papers, staticky transistor radios and rabbit-ear televisions: did my favorite team win?
