Closing Time
Morning Dose: Wednesday, December 31
☀️ Good Morning:
Instead of meeting in fancy hotels, I wonder what would happen if we roped off a section of Times Square and forced baseball executives and agents to spend the night together waiting for the ball to drop.
I bet we would get a few more deals done when the only way to warm yourself is to relieve yourself.
The Hot Stove is as cold as the year is new.
We should find some heat soon with Tatsuya Imai’s posting window closing on Friday. You would think something will happen in the next 24 hours to give time for an agreement to be finalized, including a physical.
Otherwise, there’s not much new to talk about so I will dust off my persuasive essay skills again to discuss how David Stearns needs to close out the offseason.
🎁 GIVING BACK: Thanks to your generosity, I will be volunteering at least 25 hours of community service as part of our holiday volunteer drive.
We have two days left to build that number!
For every new subscriber we add between now and January 1, I will volunteer one hour of community service. Plus, you can save 15% off your subscription.
You can sign up for a Mets Fix subscription here:
Or give a gift subscription here:
Both count towards the volunteer drive.

⇢ CLOSING TIME
It’s time for David Stearns to close his own kind of deal.
We’ve heard all of the reasons for why the Mets have passed on players: they’re too old, they want too much term, they were extended a qualifying offer, they aren’t the right fit in the clubhouse, they eat their peas with a fork, or whatever criteria has kept them from making seemingly obvious moves in the current market.
Standards are good. Discipline is a virtue. But sooner or later, you realize you don’t want to die alone. Even Jack Nicholson found love in Something’s Gotta Give.
As we inch closer to spring training, there are still several attractive players available in free agency and trade. We know at least one of them is going to end up signing or being traded for less than we have imagined.
Stearns needs to make sure that favorable deal ends up being with the Mets.
