Blow it up!?! You mean like they kinda did last year at the trade deadline? Kinda, sorta, but not completely enough that they are still saying that they want to be competitive this year. I agree with you both on the podcast as to the approach if the Mets are, say, 1 game out of a WC spot at the trade deadline. Hopefully that will be the case, if not something even better record wise but given the Mets performance so far this year it is starting to not look like that will be the case. Still, I do agree with Jimmy, it is far too early yet to make any even maybe decisions about what to do at the trade deadline. The tale will be told how the Mets perform from now until the end of June. All we can say is #LGM

Regarding Stearns and his signing of Joey Wendel, his not being familiar with Giorme and his value to the team is inexcusable. Sure, he wasn't here the last few years but as a GM before you make a move to get rid of are acquire a player you should be VERY familiar with what the current player you have, his strengths & weaknesses and if you are planning to ditch him for another player you damn sure be familiar enough to make the right decision for the team. In Wendel's case, Stearns not only made the wrong decision by ditching Giorme and signing Wendel he let a quality UT player who had proven value to his current team get away for nothing in return. Now we are worrying about a backup 2b for McNeil, which wouldn't be a worry at all if Giorme was still on the team. For all the talk about the greatness of Stearns as a GM I haven't seen it yet. In fact, to this date, just the opposite. We are stuck with this arrangement for the foreseeable future though and we are definitely stuck with Cohen and his complete confidence in Stearns.

One last comment about podcast topic (which I didn't listen to), re: blow it up or make a push?

It's far too early. The deadline isn't until 2 months. We don't have the information. Nothing we say or think today matters.

That said: There's no way I see the Mets "making a push" in any extreme way. Costly trades for the short-term at long-term cost do not appear to be in this team's immediate future. Otherwise what the hell are we doing?!

I have long been a proponent of a two-pronged approach. The lazy idea is to lump every time into two categories: buyers or sellers. I think a smart team can be both. Theoretically, the Mets could, say, trade an effective starter on an expiring contract, and they could trade, say, JD Martinez -- if they have players who can reasonably fill those roles (Peterson and Vientos, for example). At the same time, they could make a move to sure up 3B by trading for Bregman, for instance.

Don't get caught up in specifics. It's too soon to consider specific moves and I'm not advocating for Bregman or anything in particular.

At same time, if Mets have a chance to grab a quality YOUNG starting pitcher who they can control beyond 2024 -- the Stroman deal, for example -- then that's always worth considering.

The great advantage goes to the seller at the trade deadline. We know this. So if you can capably fill in for JD with Vientos and turn him into a high-quality prospect or two, if the return looks really strong, I think you should strongly consider that move. Even while improving the club in other areas.
